Shout and be heard.

Poetry is one of the oldest forms of self-expression. The natives that practice the craft are deemed to be conscious, conserved and enlightened. It is food for the soul, a very strong tool one can use to create awareness. Poetry is the love of literature, something our children no longer embrace. So it definitely has something to teach. Most of the poets think being known is not important but actually, one recites to be heard. Why write if your views are not going to be heard? People listen to who they know.

You need to establish yourself as a poet.
First get recognition, well after you have written a good few and this is how;

  1. Join poetry communities or societies you will meet up with other poets and possibly work with them; this is good for growth.
  2. Take advantage of the media platforms;
  • Create a Facebook page or a blog, where you post and share your poetry.
  • Create an account on Soundcloud, where you upload and share your poems.
  • You also can submit your poems on BadilishaPoetry Radio an online poetry exchange podcast. badilishapoetry.com
  • Sign up on youtube, and create a poetry channel where you can upload videos of yourself.

 3.  Be part of poetry sessions and enter competitions, this builds your reputation.

The above mentioned will only be effective if one has good poetry on paper and a good delivery to go with it. To write good poetry one needs to write, write, write and write.

  1. There is nothing that feeds the soul good, like poetry. It's communication that trigers emotions and creates a platform of sharing knowledge and the little culture we now have due to being "liberated" Thanks to new media that enables us to reach such messages easy like the mentioned youtube.
    I love your poetry by the way :)

  2. Poetry in motion...this takes me back to my high-school days, but then there's nothing that is so uplifting like poetry. all poets can follow the footprints of Sarah Kay and Suall williams who make use of social media to establish themselves as great poets.

  3. Yes my brother, I feel we're not exposing the craft enough. A lot of PR is needed to get people to understand the purpose of poetry.

  6. You're right when you say most poets don't feel the need to be known, and I get where they're coming from. But you're also right when you say that the reason they recite poems is to be heard. But some do it for the fun of it. Truly speaking, I also love poetry but it's not many a times you'll hear poetry sessions being advertised...

    1. Advertising is expensive if you ask me sister but I mean simply being present, expose yourself, use the social platforms. Building yourself start as little as that.

  10. For the love of words, elevating all wisdom and eliminating artificial intelligence, i wish there were more blogs of this kind, funny how life is, the more we establish ways to communicate and access information, the less time generations spend in boosting their power of thought.

    Funny concept: "Conscious folk dont do it for the masses but only to express to a minor audience, whats the point of sustaining and teaching about the importance and effectiveness of words??? Poets need to be out there and they should play a role in improving literacy and shaping a better future. .

  13. I am definitely a poetry lover, if only I had the skills I would be a poet myself lol. On the real though I have been part of a poetry movement from home for a while now and have been exposed to the difficulties that they come across as poets, in truth this industry is difficult to be in it, recogniton from the department of arts and culture takes a while, to grow in this industry a lot of hard work, dedication and patience is needed. Quite frankly I wouldn't mind being part of PRPs dealing with such great art
